March 25th was my daughter's birthday and she wanted to go out for a Birthday Brunch date. So we decided to head over to The Common Table in Uptown. They also have a location at The Star located in Frisco. The Common Place is a gastropub with American food. The Common Table offers entertainment ranging from live bands to DJ’s on site. They also offer unique menus during the week. An example would be the “Pour Mans Beer Dinner”. I thought the title was funny however, you get 4 courses and 4 pairings of beer with each course for a great value that will put a smile on your face. If you like beer you should try this selection, it’s offered every Monday Night.
On the weekend we visited, there theme was an “Old School Hip Hop Brunch”. Let me just say, I enjoyed the music as much as I enjoyed the food. Their brunch menu offered a variety of selections. My daughter and I both had the Notorious P-I-G which is a 50/50 blend of smoked Applewood bacon and beef on a toasted croissant bun I chose a toasted English Muffin, an egg over easy, tomato and this awesome beer cheese sauce which is to die for! We also selected the Buttermilk Biscuit Sliders which can be served as a shared plate or an entrée. All of their food is freshly made from scratch.
One of the things I love about Brunch are the Mimosas! A Classic Mimosa starts at $3.50 and the Tropical Mimosas are $4 (within this price range) which is very reasonable in my opinion.
The Common Place is located on Fairmount in a renovated/remodeled cottage style home, the patio is located in the gated front yard with a side deck patio. It is a uniquely styled building perfect for people coming together and enjoying good food, good cocktails and different types of entertainment. If you have not been to The Common Place or have not been there in awhile stop by you may find something new or just have fun. I’m looking forward to visiting the Frisco locations soon at The Star.

Last month I had the opportunity to go try out V-eats at Trinity Groves. I’ve been dying to try their food since I began following them on Instagram. Great photos can say a lot and their photos made me hungry. Meat or no meat! Me and my two daughters headed out to try some plant based food. I’m always willing to try new things especially food. The biggest test would be if my daughters enjoyed the food.
We started our meal with the queso and chips which was very good. I ordered the Taco of the Day which was the Lemon-Pepper Chick-Non Taco it was an order of 3. My daughter ordered the Mystery Machine-Fried Chick-non Bar VQ Brisket topped with Chipotle Mango Sauce, Guacamole, Lettuce and Tomatoes and The Shroom-Grilled Portobello Mushroom Panini with Pesto, Tomato, Basil and Mozzarella on your choice of bread listed on the menu. The sandwiches were huge and very filling. They received two thumbs up from my girls. The tacos were delicious and I did not miss the chicken. The flavor of chicken, the texture and the crunch of chick-non was perfect.
Our Waitress was very informative and patient with us newbies. She told us a little about the Owner/Executive Chef Troy Gardner who has 20 years of catering and restaurant experience. The Sous Chef, Evita Tezeno has been a vegan advocate since the 1980’s.The restaurant has a cozy vibe with original paintings on the walls created by Chef Evita. Not only do the customers get to admire her work, we were told she recently sold a few of her originals to Denzel Washington to add to his home collection.
V-Eats is located in Trinity Groves, if you have not visited make sure you do it soon. It’s well worth the bite!

Last night my family and I had Chicken Tortilla Soup using my Instant Pot. I think I’m in Love with this kitchen accessory. If you are busy woman or a busy person, I would invest in this product. This baby is fast, simple and just awesome! I chopped my veggies and prepped for all my ingredients before using my pot. Just quickly, I’m going to list all the ingredients I used and most of them I already had in my pantry/freezer.
Here’s what I used:
1 tablespoon of olive oil
1 pkg of chicken tenderloins
5 cups of chicken broth
1 can of rinsed black beans
½ cup of frozen corn
1 chopped green pepper
1 chopped yellow onion
8 oz. can or tomato sauce
1 can of rotel or 1 can of diced tomatoes
(I used the rotel because it already had the chilies added)
Spices Used on Chicken and Soup
1-2 tablespoon of cumin (added to the chicken and to the liquid ingredient when added)
2 tablespoons of salt and pepper (added to the chicken and to the liquid ingredient when added)
1 teaspoon of minced garlic (added to chopped veggie before adding the liquid)
1 tablespoon of chili powder (added to chicken and liquid ingredients when added)
1 tablespoon of taco seasonings.
Here’s what I did:
I set my Instant Pot on sauté to begin warming. I added my olive oil and my chopped peppers and onions and sautéed until tender for 3-4 minutes if medium chopped. Next I added the chicken broth, tomato sauce, the rinsed black beans, frozen corn, seasoned chicken and the remainder of the spices. I also added some crushed tortilla chips as a thickening agent. I would say a small handful, my hands are small (6 chips).
Now put your lid on and lock your lid. Change your setting on your Instant Pot to Soups and Stews and set your time to 8-10 minutes. I set my time for 10 minutes. Once the soup is done, do not open the vent, let it release its pressure by sitting for 10-15 minutes. The Instant Pot will automatically change settings to warm. When the time has passed open the vent and dinner is served.
Our dinner was ready in less than 45 minutes. OH YES! I forgot during the 10 minutes when your soup is cooking, you can set up all your toppings. (Shredded cheese, sour cream, limes, jalapenos, tortilla chips cilantro, avocados whatever your heart desires….it’s all optional)

I love this time of year and Halloween really makes fall official. It is also a reason to eat a lot of candy or should I say sweets/treats. I think sweet and treats sounds better than saying candy. What do you think?
This time of year beginning with Halloween you will find yourself surrounded by all kinds of sugary goodness. These last couple of years my Baby Chef and I have enjoyed making Halloween goodies. She loves helping me cook and she loves being involved with me in the kitchen. Last year we made a Halloween cake and cupcakes with candy corn and Pepperidge Farm Milano Cookies.
This year I was able to find some pretty simple recipes that seem to be kid friendly, fun and on a stick. This will make it easier to pass out and share with her friends next week. My Baby Chef will be able to get her hands in on all the Halloween fun! The recipes names, pictures and links are listed below.

There’s no place like the STATE FAIR OF TEXAS! If you have never been, it’s an event you must add to your To Do List, Bucket List or whatever you want to call it list. Our state fair is held every year in Dallas, TX at the same time of the year. It begins the last Friday in September with a parade through Downtown Dallas and ends the thirds Sunday in October. This upcoming weekend will be the last weekend for the fair. So I am going share a few things we did and enjoyed. Also, I have a tip that I learned and I want to share with you as well.
This year the fair has something for everyone. My personal favorite is all about the food. I begin my fair day with my first stop at Fletchers Corny Dog. Fletchers is always my first stop after purchasing my coupons. Their booths are located throughout the entire park. There’s something special about that golden crispy fried batter wrapped around that hotdog on a stick, topped with that slightly spicy yellow Heinz Mustard. It’s heaven on a stick! The crunch from your first bite is exactly what you have been waiting for all year.
Some of my other favorites are Sausage On A Stick, the Roasted Corn on a stick, the Spiral Potato Chips and don’t let me forget about the Funnel Cake with the Strawberry Sauce on top. I hope you all don’t think I am eating all this alone! It’s all a shared effort with family and friends. We always take this opportunity to make this a family event. We’re all getting a taste of everything. We also took an opportunity to try new items such as, the Fried Jambalaya, the Fried Pecan Pie and also the Caribbean Pineapple with shrimp, chicken, rice and chunks of pineapple in a halved carved out pineapple bowl. This was enough to feed 2 people and 36 Coupons. I’m just saying!
The State Fair of Texas has everything, it has art, music, history, culture, museums, livestock, amusement rides, auto shows and so much more. As I stated earlier, there’s something for everyone. So try to make it out to the fair this weekend and have fun! If you’re not able to make it out for the last weekend, make sure you add it to your calendar for next year.
Oh yeah! Before I leave you, I wanted to share what I learned just recently. If you have coupons left over, those coupons are good to use next year. The fair coupons never expire!

Hey Happy Friday!
So, just as I promised, here's my first recipe to share with you. It's perfect for the weekend and it's easy. I will list all the ingredients followed by the instructions to cook.
First thing first.
1 can of refrigerated biscuit dough
1/2 a cup of sugar
1 tablespoon of cinnamon
1/2 cup of brown sugar
1/4 cup of butter or margarine
1/4 cup of nuts, pecans raisins (Optional-select what you like)
Preheat oven to 350. Grease your muffin pan. Mix your sugar and cinnamon mixture together in a bowl or plastic bag. Take the biscuit dough and cut in to 4 slices. Drop the biscuit slices into the cinnamon/sugar mixture coating all over. After coating the dough add each quarter into the muffin cup. You should be able to get 3 into each cup. Also, if you adding nuts or raisins add between the slices of dough. In a small sauce pan melt your butter and brown sugar until smooth on a low heat. Pour the mixture over the each muffin cup covering the biscuit dough. Bake using the instruction time on the biscuit can. Once they are done remove from oven and place on a plate to cool and enjoy!

My name is Dawnette. I decided to create a blog to share recipes with those who will go with me on this new journey. Have you ever met someone who said, "I am not a cook or I don't know how to make anything that involves food?" Well, I don't believe that is necessarily true. Deep down I believe there's a cook in all of us. Cooking does not have to be difficult. In fact when I cook during the week I choose to use recipes that are quick, easy and fast.
I plan to share simple recipes that we can all do. I want you to make the recipe and let me know how it works out. I will post a recipe later this week. Over the weekend I want you to make it! I can't wait for you to try it and to hear back from you.
